🇬🇧 Budapest is one of those European cities where, when trying to describe it, one ends up using sentences such us ‘the first… the eldest… the biggest… the unique…’. It’s breathtaking to walk around and look at buildings and guess the history behind. I’m mroe than grateful to have been able to spend 12 days in this city. Here, I share 13 top of the top curiosities. (Yes, there could have been 10, but I’m adding 3 personal ones):

🇪🇸 Budapest es una de esas ciudades en las que los adjetivos para describirla casi siempre son ‘la primera… la más antigua… el más grande… el único…’ .
Es sobrecogedor, esta ciudad tiene de todo, y yo he recopilado, en 12 días, las 13 curiosidades más de lo más de Budapest. (Podrían haber sido 10, pero es que he añadido 3 personales al final del todo)

At the Closure Ceremony of #AtelierBUDAPEST: First time to get a tattoo? ;)

Budapest is, along with Monaco city, the only city in Europe that has a wide variety of caves and natural tunnel under the city. All open to the public.
The Chain Bridge, or Szénchenyi, built in 1849, was the first to connect the two cities of Pest and Buda.
The Danube is the longest river in the European Union region.
Around the Citadelle, in Buda, you will find the most astonishing houses and gardens. The Turks built this bastion to keep the Hungarian rebels safe, but it was never used for war purposes. From here one can see the Danube, the Parliament, the Buda Castle, and almost the whole city of Budapest.
The UNESCO has added the Banks of the Danube in Budapest, the Andrassy Avenue and the Metro line 1 as World Heritage.

Budapest es la única ciudad, junto con Mónaco, en Europa, que tiene un entramado subterráneo de cuevas que además están abiertas al público y aventureros.
El puente de las cadenas, o Széchenyi Chain, construido en 1849, fue el primero en unir Pest con Buda.
El Danubio es el río más largo de la Unión Europea.
En Buda, rodeando la Citadella, están las casas más impresionantes. Los turcos levantaron este bastión, entre 1848 y 49 para mantener a los rebeldes húngaros, aunque fue más para impresionar, y nunca se usó con fines bélicos. Desde aquí arriba, se contempla todo, desde la cúpula de la Basílica, el Parlamento, las orillas de Danubio, Isla Margarita, el castillo de Buda y los puentes.

Budapest Parliament Building is the third biggest in the world!

The Metro line 1 is the second oldest eldest in Europe after the London tube.
The Parliament building in Budapest is the third biggest in the world after the ones in Bucharest, Romania, and Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The Veli Bej spa is said to be not only the oldest but also the most beautiful Ottoman bath in Budapest. It was built back in 1574-75. As a anecdote: Besides the knwon three Ottoman baths in the city (Király, the Rudas and the Veli Bej), there were among 7-9 smaller baths built in the 16th – 17th centuries that didn’t survive the passing of time.
The Central Market of Budapest, also known as the Grand Market Salon of Budapest, is the biggest market with a roof in the country.

La UNESCO incluyó el panorama de la capital húngara como Patrimonio de la Humanidad, junto con las orillas del Danubio, la Avenida Andrassy y la línea 1 de metro.
La línea 1 de metro es la segunda más antigua de Europa, después de la de Londres.
El edificio del Parlamento de Budapest es el tercero más grande del mundo después de los de Bucharest, Rumanía, y Buenos Aries, Argentina.

The Four Seasons Hotel, opened in 2004, received the Award Best of the Bests on the year of its inauguration. A night here starts at 524€ (and as the prices go up you get to choose breakfast included and the view over the Danube).

Como curiosidad: Aparte de los tres baños de época otomana que existen hoy en día (el Király, el Rudas y el Veli Bej), otros 7 – 9 también de los siglos XVI-XVII no sobrevivieron.
El Mercado Central de Budapest, conocido también como el Gran Salón del Mercado de Budapest es la plaza de mercado cubierta bajo techo más grande de Hungría.
El Hotel Four Seasons, al pie del Puente de las Cadenas, recibió, en su inauguración en 2004, el premio Best of the Bests. Una noche aquí, como curiosidad, empieza en 524€ (a medida que los precios suben vamos hablando de desayuno incluido y vistas al Danubio).

Let me finish with some of my ‘first times’ below.

This was my first time ever in Budapest (out of the buckett list, babe!). It was also my first time in Hungary. I’m so grateful for having spent 12 days in such a historical city.
Curiosity. It is never too late. In Budapest I went to my first ever contemporary dance show. It was at the Müpa and the play was Oedipus by Yvette Bozsik Company.
Aaaaaaand as a final curiosity, I’ll say that being part of the #AtelierBUDAPEST has given me the opportunity, after many many years involved in classical and early music, too a composer, who is alive!! ;-) (thanks, Sir Jonathan Mills)

Y como siempre en estas listas, mis ‘primeras veces’.

Ésta era mi primera vez en Budapest (¡tachado ya de la buckett list!). También era la primera vez que visitaba Hungría. Y qué alegría poder decir que he pasado 12 días enteros explorando una ciudad tan histórica como Budapest.
Como nunca es tarde, en Budapest asistí por primera vez a un espectáculo de danza contemporánea. Vimos, en el Müpa Budapest, Oedipus de la Compañía Yvette Bozsik.
Y como curiosidad final, mi participación en el #AtelierBUDAPEST ha hecho que por primera vez en mi vida, tras tantos años en música clásica y antigua, haya conocido un compositor ¡que está vivo! ;-) (gracias, Sir Jonathan Mills)

🇬🇧 One of my first visits as soon as I actually landed was to the Impact Hub Budapest. Back in Madrid I work and develop my projects at the Impact Hub Madrid. More than a space, a network of almost 300 people where ideas have sex (the current motto). A place for inspiration and synergies. Impact Hub Budapest is two months old, it has recently been opened. With a program still to define, and with (by now) 12 coworkers (people who rent a space, table, along with others to work), this hub promises to become very alive in this young city.

🇪🇸 Una de mis primeras visitas en Budapest fue a Impact Hub Budapest. En Madrid desarrollo mis proyectos dentro de Impact Hub Madrid, un espacio donde casi 300 personas con sus ideas, proyectos, se juntan. Un lugar donde la sinergia brota y de donde saco casi toda mi inspiración. Impact Hub Budapest es un espacio que solo lleva dos meses abiertos. Con un programa aún no tan definido, y con solo (por ahora) 12 coworkers (personas que alquilan un espacio, mesa, silla, dentro de una sala diáfana), este hub promete. Muero de amor con el futbolín que tienen!

The Hungarian State Opera House (Hungarian: Magyar Állami Operaház) is a neo-Renaissance opera house located in central Budapest, on Andrássy út (check this street out, it's UNESCO World Heritage!). As part of the #AtelierBUDAPEST the 43 participant had a private tour when the building was closed, during the evening, and it was such a privilege!
Originally known as the Hungarian Royal Opera House, it was designed by Miklós Ybl, a major figure of 19th century Hungarian architecture. Construction began in 1875, funded by the city of Budapest and by Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria-Hungary, (who wouldn't accept the construction of an opera who could be bigger that his one on Vienna), and the new house opened to the public on the 27 September 1884. At the inauguration, Franz Joseph I said: I said it couldn't be bigger, but no one told me that it could be more beautiful!

La Ópera Estatal de Hungría (en húngaro: Magyar Állami Operaház) es un edificio neorrenacentista situado en el centro de Budapest, en la calle Andrássy (chequead esta calle, ¡es Patrimonio de la Humanidad!). Como parte del #AtelierBUDAPEST, los 43 participantes tuvimos un tour privado cuando el edificio estaba cerrado, durante la noche, ¡menudo privilegio!
Originalmente conocido como la Royal Opera House de Hungría, fue diseñada por Miklós Ybl, una figura importante de la arquitectura húngara del siglo XIX. La construcción comenzó en 1875, financiado por la ciudad de Budapest y por el emperador Francisco José I de Austria-Hungría, (que no aceptaba la construcción de una ópera que podría ser más grande que la suya en Viena), y la nueva casa se abrió al público el 27 de septiembre de 1884. En la inauguración, Francisco José I dijo: Les hice prometer que no sería más grande que la de Viena, ¡pero nadie me dijo que podría ser más hermosa!

🇬🇧 As part of the #AtelierBUDAPEST, we enjoyed many cultural visits. Another evening, we had dinner and enjoyed a live concert at the A38. Cool name, right? But, what is it?

A38 is the reincarnation of a Ukranian stone-carrier ship. With its inauguration on 30 April 2003, it started a new life on the Danube in Budapest as a cultural venue. Since its opening it has become one of Budapest's most important venues, and according to artists' feedback, one of Europe's coolest clubs. By its first birthday on 30 April 2004 - which happens to be the day when Hungary joins the EU - the A38 team will have managed about 200 events out of which approximately will have been international.
The name comes from Artemovszk 38, which is the name of a ship prototype and the reminder of a period of design and industrial history on the verge of extinction. A Ukrainian stone-carrier ship, built in 1968, was tugged through international waters in order to receive a complete makeover and an infusion of new life. The building project lasted for one and a half years. Architects, ship engineers, acoustic designers, electricians, musicians and promoters contributed their skills and experience to make it an understated but elegant, artist and audience friendly place with a concert venue, bars, rooms and a restaurant.

🇪🇸 Como parte del #AtelierBUDAPEST otra de las noches tuvimos una visita cultural, esta vez al A38. El nombre es muy molón, ¿pero qué es?
A38 es la reencarnación de un barco de piedra portadora de Ucrania. Con su inauguración el 30 de abril de 2003 empezó una nueva vida en el Danubio en Budapest como un lugar cultural. Desde su apertura se ha convertido en uno de los lugares más importantes de Budapest, y de acuerdo a la retroalimentación de los artistas, uno de los mejores clubes de Europa. Mediante su primer cumpleaños el 30 de abril 2004 - que pasa a ser el día en que Hungría se une a la UE - el equipo de A38 se habrá conseguido cerca de 200 eventos de los cuales aproximadamente habrán sido internacional.
El nombre proviene de Artemovszk 38, que es el nombre de un prototipo de nave y el recordatorio de un período de diseño y la historia industrial en el borde de la extinción. Un barco de piedra portadora de Ucrania, construido en 1968, que se tiró a través de aguas internacionales con el fin de recibir un cambio de imagen completa. El proyecto de construcción se prolongó durante un año y medio. Arquitectos, ingenieros, diseñadores de buques acústicas, electricistas, músicos y promotores aportaron sus conocimientos y experiencia para que sea un discreto pero elegante, artista y público lugar muy agradable con una sala de conciertos, bares, salones y un restaurante.

🇬🇧 As festival managers, it’s inspiring to feel where the difference of situations, environments, is so clear. As an example, let's talk about Rania Elias and her relationship with East Jerusalem.
It would be very difficult for any of us to organize an arts, music and film festival in East Jerusalem. Perhaps as difficult for us as it is for Rania, who had to cancelled it up to four times and pospone it, and nevertheless there she is, keeping up with yet another of the edition in July 2016.
But in her context, where she is, the knowdledge that she has about the location, the atmosphere created there, makes it easier. Why? Because no one else than her could possibly understand that context, traditions and threats at that exact situation.
Our own knowledge of the locations is super important. Just as senses are placed, places are sensed, as Sir Jonathan Mills stated.

🇪🇸 Como managers de festival, es inspirador poder estudiar las diferentes situaciones y entornos, sean claras o no. Y como ejemplo puesto por nuestro mentor Sir Jonathan Mills: Rania Elias y la parte este de la ciudad de Jerusalén.
Rania tiene, como tendría cualquiera, una dificultad enorme para organizar un festival de música, cine y diversas artes en la zona este de Jerusalén, y aún así, venciendo cuatro cancelaciones y posponiendo su Festival, lo logró, y lo sigue haciendo. ¿Por qué? Porque aunque difícil, en su contexto, donde ella está y el conocimiento que tiene de ese entorno, lo hace más fácil. ¿Cómo más fácil? Porque nadie más podría posiblemente entender el contexto, tradiciones y amenazas en esa situación.
Así arrancaba Sir Jonathan Mills una de sus citas: Nuestro conocimiento de la localización, del entorno, es muy importante. 'Al igual que los sentidos son emplazados, los emplazamientos (como localizaciones) son sentidos'.

🇬🇧 Identify every sound and place it, says mentor Mills, and think about the role of sound in place making.
What Jonathan adviced us was to be a good urban planner. ‘Be architects of smell, sound, tactile. Because at the deepest level is all about play, experiencing that relationship’.

🇬🇧 One of the general feeling yesterday came when we focused on the topics of the Atelier. Being: Community, audience, fund-raising, artists, international/intercultural, diversity, impact, communication, marketing, promotion, coproduction, innovation, politics, ecology, innovation, diversity, and many more.
We gathered in three big groups to discuss our experiences and beliefs with Sir Jonathan Mills, Hugo de Greef and Rania Elias.

At the group I was part of, I realised that our experiences had a common base: responsibility, integration, social action.
Hally Jean spoke about the Australian aborigins, the indigenous community and the role her festival played on integration. I remarked the success of Música en Segura Festival thanks to bringing together musicians from different fields (flamenco, early music, tango and string quartet) to Spanish Heritage buildings, such as the Arab baths, the medieval castle, and the olive oil mills. And the add up of selling the experiences of wine and olive oil tastings, and hiking at the region amazing surroundings. So ir was more about integration of historical buildings.
Jan de Moor stated one of the problems of the Concertgebouw Brugge: the aging of the audience! How the majority of their audience are over 57 years old. And how, in order to innovate and bring younger audiences, the venue came up with new experiences, and not so many ordinary concerts. From Bach with yoga, to listening to an ensemble while laying in the dark. A whole different perspective.

So, in a way, we were really talking about a the role of a festival in engaging audiences, in bringing together traditions and the culture of the aborigins of each country, and of using the historical buildings and venues by bringing them back to use and life.

The true role of a festival is to help artists to dare, to engage in new projects

In between the discussions about innovation, technology, and the role of festivals, we were invited to take a private tour to the Budapest Opera, a historical venue. Time stopped, and we traveled to the 19th century, its music, its audiences! We had the chance to discuss about the differences between the aristocracy and the working class when buying tickets, an interesting elitist topic that was compared with nowadays reality: you can seat wherever as long as you pay for it (with the exception of the Royal box, saved for the president, minister and international royal guests).

After the tour, we were welcomed by Gergely Vajda, Artistic Director of the Armel Opera Festival and Competition, who did a presentation about the festival. An interesting topic were the partners of the festival. The Armel Opera Competition partners with 4 international parterns and productions and has the rfeedom of not depending directly on Hungarian political agenda or public money.
We will join and watch the second round of the Armel Opera Competition and Festival in two days.
At dinner time, the participants paired again in groups, this time diferent from the working sessions, and exchanged ideas about the venue, the Opera House, and the topics of the Atelier.

🇪🇸 Una de las anécdotas que recuerdo de este primer día en Budapest, es sobre los participantes. Es increíble darse cuenta de cómo viniendo del mismo campo, aún siendo de países tan diferentes y separados en distancia como Holanda, Australia, los EEUU, UAE... se encuentran amigos, o terceras personas en común. Eso nos llevó, a unos cuantos, a conversaciones más relajadas sobre los tópicos en común. Desde luego, un primer encuentro interesante.
Nuestro primer encuentro fue en el autobús que nos llevó al MüPa para la ceremonia de bienvenida. Nos sentamos juntos y fuimos hablando. Verdaderamente fue un buen primer encuentro en el que pudimos ver a los representantes de las instituciones y tutores, y charlas con ellos.

🇬🇧 One of the anecdotes on this first day in Budapest has to do with us participants, and how, coming most of the time from the same field and background, we find ourselves having several friends in common. It is anecdotic to think that you are meeting someone from the Netherlands, the UK, NY, and you have a third friend in common, and what follows is a conversation about common interests, friends... Quite an interesting first approach!

So we basically all met at the bus on our way to the opening ceremony, pairing up and sitting together at the bus. it is such a good idea to have an initial welcome event to be able to meet the mentors, and introduce ourselves in a personal way before we start the Atelier topic discussion on day 2.

🇪🇸 La ceremonia de inauguración nos juntó a los 43 participantes (de los 45 originales, dos no pudieron unirse por problemas con la visa). Abriendo la bienvenida, pudimos disfrutar de Agnes Havas, directora de Armel Opera Festival, anfitrión del Atelier y coorganizador en esta semana. Hugo de Greef, coordinador general de The Festival Academy, pasó por cada una de nuestras mesas durante el aperitivo para saludarnos e ir recordando caras. Al igual hizo Sir Jonathan Mills, compositor y director del Festival Internacional de Edimburgo, que además añadió unas notas al discurso de bienvenida sobre política europea e invitó a los jóvenes managers a involucrarse más allá de una tolerancia desde la distancia.

🇬🇧The Opening Ceremony brought us 43 participants (out of the original 45 participants, sadly two couldn't make it, because of political reasons). Agnes Havas, director of the Armel Opera Festival and host of the Atelier for Young Festival Mangers here in Budapest, welcomed us at the MüPa Center. Hugo de Greef, general coordinator of The Festival Academy, was so kind to come greet us one by one, curious about our stories and anecdotes. And so did Sir Jonathan Mills, composer and former director of the International Festival of Edinburgh, who also added a key note at his welcome speech about the european political situation, and inviting us young managers to get engaged beyond the tolerance.

Do not take no for an answer. Be endlessly resourceful. Most important - trust your artists. And acknowledge that the imagination of an artist can ignite the imagination of an audience.

🇬🇧 The only other Spaniard at the Atelier is Óscar Zubelzu, whom I had met in 2015 through the Side by Side project in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Also, after this week, we'll meet again in two weeks for Side by Side camp together with the Gothenburg Symphoniker.

🇪🇸 ¡Ha llegado el día! Hoy comienza el Atelier for Young Festival Managers, y yo estoy aquí gracias a una preselección, y, más importante aún, a una campaña de crowdfunding que ideé por medio de Indiegogo, y a los 25 queridos sponsors que me apoyaron. Gracias a ellos, hoy comienzo mi formación en gestión de festivales.
Para los que conocen de mis andaduras desde tiempo más reciente, os explico un poco en qué consiste. Y a partir de aquí, en el blog hablaré de la experiencia, de los encuentros con directores de festivales, compositores, con las visitas a instituciones y el trabajo de la Armel Opera Festival. ¡A mi me parece fascinante y aún no ha empezado!

La European Festival Association, y bajo ella, The Festival Academy, es una iniciativa que promueve que 45 jóvenes nos juntemos a aprender de 8 directores de festivales a nivel mundial, bajo el marco de la Armel Opera Festival de Budapest. Además, estos días tendrá lugar la Armel Opera Competition, y tendremos ocasión de ver la gestión desde dentro (¡y los resultados!).

🇬🇧 The day has come! Here I am, in Budapest, with the Atelier for Young Festival Managers about to start! You might remember how it all started: I was selected to take part at the Atelier. Shortly after, I came up with a crowdfunding campaign at Indiegogo, and thanks to my 25 angel sponsors, I'm here today, ready to learn and ready to write! I'll be updating m y blog here, and sharing it through my social media, in order for you to be able to be up to date with what's going on with the conferences, people, composers, institutions and the Armel Opera Festival.
